Inflorescence – What Is it?

In grapevines, an inflorescence is the flowering part of the vine where clusters of flowers and, subsequently, grapes will form. The inflorescence starts as a small bud in early spring and grows into a cluster of tiny flowers. Each of these flowers has the potential to become a grape if it is successfully fertilized. However, not all flowers in an inflorescence will turn into fruit; some will fall off in a process known as shatter or cooler. The arrangement, size, and shape of the inflorescence can vary depending on the grape variety. Each grape flower in the inflorescence is self-fertile, meaning that it contains both male and female reproductive organs and can self-pollinate.
